Well, she is here. I can't believe she is finally here. She is amazing and I can't possibly put into words how much we love her.
Sofia arrived at 6:45AM on 3/30/10, right on her due date! She weighed in at 8 lbs, 7 oz and 21.5 inches. She made labor go pretty quickly until it came time to push. She just did not want to 'drop'.
As I mentioned in my previous blog, the doc said she thought I'd go on my own without having to be induced and she was right! I had contractions all day long after my appointment but still nothing regular. Mike came home from work b/c I was really starting to be in pain and just wanted him home with me. He started timing my contractions and, finally, at about 9PM we decided at 5 min apart, it was time to go to the hospital. It was a very calm decision, not rushed and crazy like the movies. I was ready. We were both so ready! So, we called ahead to let them know we were on the way and got into our room about 9:30 PM. The nurse took a look and I was already at 6cm dilated! (For those who don't know, baby comes at 10 cm.) I have to brag b/c she said for a first time mom that was impressive w/ no drugs.
So, she talked to me about drug options and then measured me once more and I was already at 8 cm. My water then broke and everything was getting ready. This was at about midnight and I said bring on the epidural! Getting a needle and catheter put into your spine is definitely not a pleasant experience at all but sooo worth the pain management.
Long story short, once it was time to push, the process was quite prolonged b/c of Sofia's positioning and it was definitely a challenge. I was completely exhausted and discouraged at some points b/c nothing too much was happening but Mike assured me I was a champ. Finally, in the final pushes, I kept focused and thinking about meeting our new little baby! And out SHE came!
Once she arrived even the doc was surprised she was a girl! She fooled us all... I could not believe it but could not have been more ecstatic. It was the most emotional surreal moment of my life for sure. I was a crying mess, half out of relief, half out of sheer joy that our baby girl had finally arrived! Words truly can't begin to describe the moment.
Our time in the hospital was so wonderful. The staff there made us feel so comfortable and happy and at home. It was sad to leave them! Nice to be home, but so hard to leave. Sofie gave us a couple of great nights of sleep there and saved the hell breaking for our first night at home, at which point Mike exclaimed "I wanna go back to the hospital!" hahaha... yea, she gives us about 4 hours solid sleep typically but no true pattern has been developed yet. TBD!
I can't even explain how much I love this person. On the way home from the hospital, I just looked at Sofie and suddenly started to cry in the car - a total joyful cry - b/c I was so overcome with love. It sounds crazy but I really can't describe it. It is truly a life changer and is worth all of the sleep deprivation and putting your own needs completely aside. She is amazing and I can't believe we made her. The screaming/sleeplessness is totally forgotten when we wake up and see her eyes looking up at us first thing in the morning.
Welcome to the world, our perfect blessing SofieLu.
