Firsts

It feels like a lot has happened since I last blogged so I'll try and remember it all without boring everyone :) This will be a longer one... just warning you!

First, I have to share a personal funny story. Last month, Mike and I had alternating nights out. He went out on Friday night while I stayed in with Sofie, and on Saturday I went out with a group to the Brewers game. Well...seeing as it was about an eight hour day (tailgating plus the game), I had to bring my breast pump. I was kind of nervous as it is, especially getting into the game with it. So, when the time came to go into the game, I made my friend Jenny stay right by me so at least if I was embarassed, I'd have someone to laugh about it with! Sure enough, the guy at the door (who was definitely an older gentleman) checking bags with his little wand stopped in my bag, looked at me and asked, "What's in the box?" I smiled sheepishly and responded "Sir, it's a breast pump". He smirked and said "Go ahead." It was hilarious... I mean, it reminded me of being in school and having to tell your male teacher it's "that time of the month". They just don't want to hear about it. I did have to wonder if that man even knew what a breast pump was! Any way, I was with a group of people I did not know too well (I was the guest of my friend) and that just started a string of questions about breast feeding, pumping, etc. I then had to go into the bathroom for ten minutes (we were in a suite) while everyone wondered what the heck was going on in there. I asked one of the girls to tell them and the guys in the suite proceeded to do the "waaaa" sound (Office reference). I have to say, while I was somewhat embarassed, most of my dignity went out the window after I had a baby so nothing is too embarassing at all any more.

Soooo... enough about me, we had a few exciting first for Sofie Lu this month! We had our first road trip (long one). We drove to Indianapolis for a stop on the way to Cincinnati to meet up with my family. She was awesome. Just a couple of stops to eat and she was a trooper the whole time. In Cincinnati she had her first meeting with Uncle Matty and Grampie Lu. She got to watch her Uncle Matty (and Godfather Matty!) play baseball in a tournament. She got to celebrate Dad's first Father's Day. (On a side note - Mike is the most incredible Dad ever. One day is not enough to show my appreciation for what a perfect dad and father figure he already is! Sofie is a lucky lucky girl.) She took her first swim in the pool at our hotel. She had her first laugh for Grammie Lu. Then, of course, she had her first trip to Summerfest once we got home. Pics below :) I feel like in the past week she has grown and changed right before my eyes. Every day she's becoming more and more of a little person. Yesterday she turned three months!

On another note, she had her first "almost accident" on the way to Indy. We were so lucky that nothing happened to us, but I have to share because I truly believe God was watching out for us. About two hours into our trip, we were driving through po-dunk Indiana and the sky turned ominous and the rain came down. Lots of thunder and lightning, and then... tornado sirens. Needless to say, I was panicking. I know I need to learn how to not do this especially now that I have a child, but I feel like it's WORSE now that we have her... I will do everything in my power to protect her and keep her from harm and feeling helpless in relation to your child is the absolute worst feeling. So, I begged Mike to pull over immediately. Being in the car during a tornado just can't be a good thing... There was literally nowhere to go. We finally stopped in a McDonalds lot but realized that an all glass restaurant was probably not any better. I'm already in tears at this point but at least the sirens have stopped. So, we (stupidly) kept driving. I was in the back seat with Sofia PRAYING out loud to get through this mess. Then, just a few minutes later, Mike fishtailed and lost control of the car completely. We hydroplaned and slid into incoming traffic ... saw headlights coming towards us. It is such a blur and felt like it happened in slow motion, but I have to believe the other cars saw us, slowed down, and drove around us. There was a semi right behind us so I really have no idea how it all happened so seamlessly. Actually, I do know. We then ended up in the ditch across the highway and I immediately lost it. I was just waiting for something else to happen. But, thank God, we were safe. Sofia slept through the entire thing and only woke up after we had been sitting in the ditch for about 20 minutes. I actually took the opportunity of sitting in that ditch to nurse her so that it would calm both of us down...

God bless people in Indiana, seriously! It was amazing how many people stopped to help. A guy stopped to ask if we needed a ride somewhere, another man stopped to give us a tow number, another woman stopped b/c she had called the fire department, and finally, a guy stopped with his huge truck to pull us out. When his jumper cables broke that he tied us up with, a semi driver stopped to lend us his chains. He pulled us out with no problem once he hooked those chains on. He was just a young guy with a big strong truck and an even bigger heart. All he wanted to do was get us out of there. It was incredible. We drove away and I broke down numerous times throughout the drive b/c of "what could have been". When I finally got over thinking about that, I realized how I should be looking at it and that is that we were taken care of and I truly believe God was showing us that He has our back. I've always had my faith, and I'm normally pretty private about it, but things like this make it that much stronger and make me feel like I need to share. Having a child through things like that make it that much more powerful. I couldn't remember the song that kept coming to my mind and now I remember - it's the country song "Angels Among Us"... there absolutely are.

On that note, have a happy and safe 4th of July. Enjoy your families and count your blessings every day. We do!
